Exam 2a - two last student questions

Q: For question 20 on the spring 2011 exam 2a the answer for __________ are people who have a higher tolerance for negative inequity. was d)benevolent
Shouldn't it be e)entitleds because benevolent means that you don't care about inequity while entitleds don't care if they get more rewards than other people?
Thank you,

A: Entitleds have a higher tolerance for positive inequity; benevolents accept negative inequity.

---------------------------------------
On the fall 2008 test, question 12 says:

Among the time management and other self-management techniques recommended in class readings is
A. As a courtesy you should always answer email messages as they arrive
B. maintain multiple email accounts
C. Each days to do list should include long term things you might wish to get done in the future
D. Don't ever waste time producing a log of where you've spent your time; it's better to just look ahead

The correct answer is "B", but on the email you sent the class earlier from spring 2011, there was a similar question and the answers were "don't ever waste time producing a log of where you've spent your time" and "avoid using multiple email accounts"

I think the answer key has the wrong answer and it should really say "D" not "B".

A: The article and our class discussion recommended producing the log.  Maintaining multiple email accounts is also recommended, though it may no longer be mentioned in the assigned readings.  Any contradiction of either of these statements in class presentation or materials was an error. Therefore, B is the only correct answer.

Exam 2a questions - 2d posting

Q: I am puzzled about the recency and contrast effects.
A: Please get back to me with a more specific question based on the descriptions and examples in the text.
-------------------------------------------

Q: Also- is self monitoring defined as observing one's behavior?
A: That’s part of the definition in the text.  You should know the other half, too.
-------------------------------------------

is the motivation hygiene theory the one that holds motivation as a function of fairness in social exchanges?
A: Motivator-hygiene theory is a content theory discussed in the text as it relates to satisfaction and dissatisfaction on the job.  Fairness is associated with the next theory the text covers.  It is the first process theory the book discusses, and aspects of it appear in the virtual (Trust-Justice-Privacy) session and its notes.

-------------------------------------------

During Bill Sobel's presentation, there was a oppinion question that I wasnt sure had a right answer.  It was the clicker question relating to if there was a best time to begin working for yourself on a commission basis was? ....

Opinion questions don’t have right answers.  That particular question was answered by Michael Vela, who used to state categorically that people should start their careers on commission and continue being compensated that way.  He’s softened his stance somewhat in the time that I’ve known him.

-------------------------------------------

Also can you explain the differences between
gain and profit sharing   ///   job and work sharing

Gainsharing – applying productivity-based (increased output or reduced costs) rewards  to smaller work groups, rather than across the whole company.

Work sharing - http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/16/business/economy/16workshare.html?pagewanted=all - The term can also apply similar situations, furlough systems (especially voluntary ones) where no unemployment insurance payments apply.

Student questions regarding exam 2a

Q: Just a minor question regarding the previous "Exam 2" from Spring 2011--Question 12 reads:

12.  Among the time management and other self-management techniques recommended in class readings is ___________ .
A.  Don't ever waste time producing a log of where you've spent your time; it's better just to look ahead.
B.  Avoid using multiple email accounts.
C.  A and B, but not C and D were recommended in the readings.
D.  Always answer each email message as soon as it arrives.
E.  Schedule free time

Is the answer to "C" supposed to be switched with the answer to "E"? The answer sheet shows question 12's answer as "E", which only makes sense if "C" and "E" are to be swapped.

A: You are right. Sorry I forgot to correct the copy I uploaded.  …mf

--------------------------------------------------------------

Can you explain the meaning of "Machiavellian/Machiavellianism", and give an example of that? I don't understand the concept of "Machiavellian/Machiavellianism".

A high-mach is one who is ruthless and dishonest in dealing with others.  Low-machs are less subject to displaying this kind of behavior.

Q: I can't seem to find in my notes or in the reading the definition of self-fulfilling prophecy.  Could you please explain to me what this term means?

A: For our purposes this occurs in instances where a supervisor (or rater, teacher or anyone else with some influence or authority) has a prediction about a person, acts on that prediction, and in so doing causes that prediction to come true.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: I just have a question about session 15: Team Building and High Performance Team.  I first wrote all of the Powerpoint slides down for all of the sessions that were on the ERES.  I'm just confused with the information you have on the slides compared the information in the readings.  For example, for how to create a high profiling team, on your Powerpoint slides it says "promote understanding, ensure adequate knowledge, and facilitate effective interaction". This matches up one of the sections of the readings perfectly, except for it has a different description under it than what you have.

A: I don’t see where it says “high profiling” team and how the descriptions are different.  It seems, though, as if you have a good grasp of the main points on the slide.  If you paste in exactly what you’re referring to, perhaps I can give you a better answer.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Q:  Another example is for the characteristics of high-performing team on your slides are different than what one of the readings say.  Which information should I be keeping on my study guide to study?

A: If the slides actually contradict the readings, please let me know.  Otherwise, there is often much more information in the readings than on the slides.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Also, where can I find the information about high-performance work place teams that you found information of problem solving teams-employee involvement teams and quality circle?

A: Problem-solving teams are just what they sound like.  We never discussed them much further.  The other terms will be covered in some detail next weeks, so they won’t be on this exam.
----------------------------------------------------
Q: Spring 2011 Question 34 reads:
34.  As noted in class, _________ is often facilitated by outside consultants.
A.  None of the above.   D.  Perception.
B.  Running a firm's customer service program.   E.  A company's continuous improvement program.
C.  A team-building exercise based on an outdoor experience.

The answer key stated that "C" was the answer. I selected "A" for "none of the above" because according to the text, the definition of "formal retreat approach" is "team building that takes place at an off site 'retreat', often with outside consultants", while the "outdoor experience approach" is defined as "placing team members in a variety challenging, physical activities that takes team work to the extreme." Does an "outdoor experience" also include outside consultants?...

A: C is correct; it was discussed that way in class.
----------------------------------------------------

Q: Also, the set up of the answers to Spring 2011 question 35 is confusing...
35.  As noted in class and/or the readings, effective team leaders of high-performing teams ____________ .
A.  Both A and B are characteristics of an effective leader.
B.  Find ways to create early success.
C.  Avoid creating a sense of urgency.
D.  Manage to avoid all slumps or "bumps in the road."
E.  Consider "multiskilling" to be duplicated effort and therefore a waste of resources.

A: Another case of my uploading an “unfixed” exam version.  The answer is B.  Sorry…mf

Session 14 (10/18) video presentation

Regarding the online presentation assigned for 10/18, I'd caution you not to put off watching it until the last minute.  The video server might become overloaded as we approach our 10/27 exam date, and I don't believe it can handle dozens of viewers at the same time.

Asg04 - Due on TUESDAY, 10/25

Individual Blackboard Assignment #4

Due on TUESDAY, 10/25

In the "student edition" of the premium content site, go to the Manager's Hot Seat section and complete Scenario #15: Working in Teams: Cross-Functional Dysfunction. Review the profiles, references, scenario, and dossier before you create your report.

In this case, however, do not just answer the question about what Joe Tanney should do to make the implementation a success. Indicate as well what Joe—and probably Joe’s boss, Jeffrey Dillon (see Dossier exhibit 2)—could have done at the outset to prevent or minimize the challenges Rosa and Simon may present to this project. Feel free to include aspects of team size, motivation, mutual responsibility, “virtuality,” etc.

As in the previous assignment, you must answer the questions posed during the scenario, include them in your report, and paste the resulting text file into a Blackboard discussion entry.

Please post your assignment by CREATING A THREAD titled Asg04-GrpNN, where NN represents your 2-digit group number. If you are in Group 2, for example, the subject heading will include "Asg04-Grp02" with no spaces, and the thread will be created on the group 2 discussion forum.

In addition to the assignment above, each group is invited to SELECT A LIAISON on or before 10/27. There is no set method for selecting this “officer,” though the most common process is for someone to volunteer on the group discussion list and give anyone else who is interested a couple of days to speak up.

The liaison will complete two or three very easy additional tasks in exchange for being excused from completing any two Blackboard assignments. (Nobody has ever [EVER!!!] regretted the decision to volunteer to be their team’s liaison.)

Once liaisons have been chosen, they need to come up before or after class to enter their names on a list. This can also be filled in during office hours in BA324.

Liaisons have no additional task to do for THIS assignment, however. They just complete it the same way as anyone else.

Blackboard Individual Asg #3 - Due Thursday, October 13

Blackboard Individual Assignment #3
Due on or before THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13.

In the "student edition" of the premium content site, go to the Manager's Hot Seat section and complete Scenario #12: Virtual Workplace--Out of the Office Reply. Review the profiles, references, scenario, and dossier before you create your report evaluating how Ralph Ramos handled the situation. (Be sure to answer the 6 multiple choice questions in the conference scenario video itself, as THESE REPONSES WILL BE PASTED IN AS PART OF YOUR REPORT.)

Once you've created your report, you can save it--along with the responses--to a text file to copy and paste into a Blackboard discussion entry.

Please post your assignment as Asg03-GrpNN, where NN represents your 2-digit group number. If you are in Group 05, for example, the subject heading will include "Asg03-Grp05" with no spaces, and your own thread should be created on the existing grp05 discussion forum.

Remember to post your assignment as a thread.  Do not create any other forum, as forums are not identified with individual students and will not earn any credit.

Liaisons who have already been chosen or self-identified have no additional responsibilities; they just do the same assignment as everyone else.
